Changing a Forklift Battery

Before you attempt to change forklift batteries, you should keep a few key recommendations in mind. It is crucial that you understand the risks that are associated with installing a forklift battery incorrectly. Any small mistake could cause massive damage to your equipment. Even worse, you could cause serious injury to yourself and/or other workers in your facility.

In order to correctly change your forklift battery, you will need a second forklift to lift the batteries. It is also recommended that you have a three foot long chain with C hooks on each end and a short block that is one to two feet long. You will need to check the capacity rating of your hoist to ensure that it will easily handle the batteries. You should also check your clearance to be certain that you will not cause damage to the forklift that you are using as well as to other people who may be near.

Be certain that your scrap forklift LiFePO4 Batteries are treated very carefully. Although they may be discharged, they do still contain enough hydrogen gas and energy to cause explosions if handled incorrectly. Do not lift out the batteries by the fork tips. Also ensure that any chains or other metal never comes into direct contact with the connectors located at the battery's top area. Shrouds should be kept over the connectors at all times. Lift forklift batteries and install them so that the cables are correctly positioned. It is crucial that you use a spotter at all times who possessed excellent communication skills to ensure that no damages and/or injuries occur.
